Struggling with a dual identity, failed comedian Arthur Fleck meets the love of his life, Harley Quinn, in prison at Arkham State Hospital. . The name Folie a Deux comes from the 19th century French psychiatrists Charles Lasègue and Jules Falret.

The term was coined to describe two or more people who share the same insanity or delusion. The foreman of the jury speaks of “the people of New York”; instead of Gotham City. This is because New York State is the plaintiff in the criminal case, and this version of Gotham City is obviously located in New York State (most versions of Gotham are in New Jersey). Arthur Fleck: [Written as a malevolent autograph with a sad face] I HOPE you get cancer. The film opens with the title Looney Tunes with the Warner Bros logo surrounded by rings and the Joker’s face.

Joker 2 once again tries to delve into the mind of Arthur Fleck, but unfortunately overlaps too much with the first film. The original Joker was such a precise and detailed character study that by the end it felt like there was little left to reveal. It’s that feeling that haunts this sequel as it tries to explore new dimensions of Arthur’s complex psyche, making the film feel more like an epilogue than a new story. Joaquin Phoenix is, as expected, excellent as Arthur Fleck, further enhancing his disturbing portrayal of the Joker.

But the film constantly undermines their strong performance with unnecessary musical numbers and courtroom drama that feels out of place. Ironically, the film feels at its best when it references the iconic scenes and atmosphere of the first film, rather than when it tries to experiment with new elements. The callbacks to Arthur’s lonely and troubled journey in the original film create the same terrifying tension and emotional weight that made The Joker so powerful. However, attempts to add new layers with courtroom drama and out-of-nowhere musical sequences ultimately disrupt the flow of the story and feel more like distractions than meaningful additions. The film shines most when it focuses on the twisted and toxic relationship between the Joker and Harley.
Ultimately, Joker 2 feels more like a sequel with nothing to say
Phoenix and Gaga’s chemistry adds an endearing layer to the film, but these moments are sadly few and far between. While the film has its high points, especially in its performances, it feels more like an unnecessary addition to the first chapter than a compelling new chapter. Fans of the original may find it redundant as it offers little new exploration of Arthur’s character or the world he inhabits.
